UPF are highly processed foods.
We come across ultra-processed foods (UPF) almost everywhere: these are highly processed products that often contain a high energy density, little dietary fibre and numerous additives. These products are industrially produced, are usually cheap and make little contribution to a healthy diet.
A study by Hall et al. (2019) has shown that regular consumption of UPF can lead to weight gain. Further research points to links between high consumption of UPF and serious health problems, including (bowel) cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental illnesses such as depression.
Why do we still use UPF?
The answer is simple: UPF products are practical, tasty, have a long shelf life and are cheap to produce. They often do not require refrigeration, which makes them easier to transport and store. In addition, many of these foods are designed to be particularly tempting and almost addictive.
How can we reduce our consumption of UPF?
It's hard to completely ban ultra-processed food from our everyday lives, but we can minimise our consumption. The key is to shop consciously: Learn to read and understand labels correctly. The Open Food Facts website offers helpful support with its associated app, which provides information about the ingredients and processing levels of food.
